We had the morning free so worked on photos and future travel items. These photos are of lunch with the volcano in the background. Excellent nachos.
Our excursion today was an afternoon hike at the base of the Arenal Volcano. It was mainly for views and for information. The volcano dominates the entire area so we were taking photos of it from everywhere...both on the hike and from our hotel room.
The forest here is very new, due to the fact that lava flows of the volcano occurred fairly recently. Consequently, according to the guide, these forests aren’t as full of wildlife as others in Costa Rica.
The trail involved
a lot of step, many formed by roots.
This made the footing uneven so Mary dropped out only a short way into
the hike.
On the way back
to the parking lot she got some good shots of a number of birds including a
colorful Oropendola,
a Keel-Billed Toucan (Rainbow Toucan),
a Swallow-tailed Kite,
a Crested Guan,
an Eastern Wood Pewee (we think),
a Wood Thrush,
and a Clay-Colored Thrush. The thrush was pretty non-descript but it is the national bird of Costa Rica, largely because of its lovely bird call.
Paul got lots of good photos of the volcano and the surrounding countryside.
That evening we got some photos of the lovely hotel pool with the volcano in the background.
